How long will it take to rank in Google?
This is a question that I get asked regularly and it is a difficult one to answer as there are many factors to take into account, for example, competition, budget, website strength etc.
However, at ahrefs.com they decided to work through the mountains of rankings data to provide a more definite answer.
They took 2 million random keywords and collated the data on the Top 10 ranking pages for each of them. The result was the following graph:
As you can see in the graph above, the average Top 10 ranking page is 2+ years old and those that rank at position #1 are almost 3 years old.
Here are the results of the 5.7% “lucky” pages, which are less than a year old but still managed to rank. They have been categorised by the search volume of the ranked keyword.
So, as illustrated in the graphs you can rank for low-volume keywords in a very short time, while the high-volume ones take almost a year to get into the Top 10.
Questions and Answers
Q: How do I find out what’s a low, medium or high volume keyword.
A: Google Adwords has a free keyword tool, in here Google will give each word or phrase a designation when compared with other keywords and how much other business owners are willing to pay for it.
