Hunting and Farming – November

Do you know the 80/20 rule? 80% of your business comes from your top 20% of your customers? Well I didn’t!
For me I think it’s more like 40/40. I don’t have an active farming plan, so to speak, where I push side services.
Most business it seems to be the other way around. So what is the solution to maintaining a healthy business? Designating a farmer and a hunter.

This might be yourself or an employee but list out tasks to complete like referral ideas, side services listed in invoices etc for farming and for hunting having an active employee follow up with leads the same or next day. General I know but thinking about it is the first step.

HTML5 Looking into the future

HTML5 is touted to be the biggest change in web standards since the web its self was invented.
HTML5 will change websites from a book where users click/flip pages to access different content to something more like a whiteboard with lots of markets.
You’ll be able to edit pages much easier, full 3d games much like the xbox will be inside the browser, no more pesky plug-ins for flash or videos.

Whats this mean for web design?

It might mean a step back in terms of user experience. Remember flash and how annoying it was to have to skip movie’s, intros and landing pages?
The same goes for HTML5 the added flexibility and animation means website owners will probably make silly decisions on “Arty” intros that impact negatively on user experience.

Its not all doom and gloom, websites will run better between browsers. Transitions between pages will be smoother and forms will animate and move.

Questions and Answers

Q: What’s the best way to monitor my SEO?

A:  Set a day and time to check your ranks and be constant. Google fluctuates so its a good idea to check maybe once a week on the same day and time.
Obviously first you need to find the right keywords with the right amount of traffic, then optimise your sites content and code/meta. Lastly its all about links, links from blogs, forums, directories and other sites. These need to be manually made by hand with varying anchor and keyword text.
