Hughesdale started, not as a Melbourne suburb, but rather as a rural region of Oakleigh along the railroad line among it and Murrumbeena. In the 1880s, because of the nearness of the railroad the stretch of land pulled in a few experts who set up considerable homes on extensive bequests. A large number of its soonest homes are a piece of Oakleigh and Murrumbeena’s initial history. The first township was spread out around Poath Road with little paths, some cobbled in bluestone.
James Vincent Hughes, chairman of City of Oakleigh from 1924 to 1925 campaigned vigorously with the Poath Road Railway Station League for another railroad station for the region. In 1924 the League recommended the station be classified “Hugheston”, however in February 1925, in the blink of an eye before the station opened, Victorian Railways chose its name would be “Hughesdale”. After 10 years there was a move to rename Poath Road “Hughesdale Road”, yet this was dismissed by the then Caulfield City Council.
Following the opening of railroad station on 28 February 1925 the rural area blasted with a business territory quickly jumping up close to the station along Poath Road and subdivision of scanty land among Murrumbeena and Oakleigh for private advancement.
