Balwyn was subdivided into little homesteads and brushing runs. In the late 1850s Andrew Murray named his home Balwyn from the Gaelic bal and the Saxon wyn, signifying ‘the home of the vine’. Balwyn Road and the region were named after it. The house was situated on the site that is currently part of Fintona Girls’ School.

In 1868 Balwyn Primary School was opened in Balwyn Road around 100 meters north of Whitehorse Road. It was moved to its present site, south of Whitehorse Road, in 1880, inverse Murray’s property. Balwyn’s first town focus was close to the crossing point of Balwyn and Whitehorse Roads, containing a couple of shops, a metal forger and the athenaeum or mechanics’ organization. Anglican administrations started in 1868 and the St. Barnabas church, Balwyn Road, was opened in 1872.

Balwyn’s status as a prosperous suburb has seen centre to upper-working class families from rural areas, for example, Kew and Brighton exchange to the region to exploit the suburb’s generally vast square sizes and vicinity to a portion of Victoria’s best tuition based schools incorporating those in the neighboring rural areas of Canterbury and Kew. Some of the underlying advancement of the rural area happened along the Whitehorse Road tramline, along which the Wade satchel and the Jarvis Walker angling pole bar industrial facilities were once found. The suburb’s principle shopping territory is situated around the crossing point of Whitehorse Road and Balwyn Road.
