Initially called Rosstown, after engineer William Murray Ross one of the early pioneers of the zone. The first name lives on for the sake of the neighborhood inn, and Rosstown Road. Leila Road is named after Mr Ross’ better half, and Grange Road is named after Ross’ domain, The Grange, which has since been subdivided and is presently rural lodging homes.
In 1909 Carnegie was picked as another name in an at last unsuccessful endeavor to anchor assets for a library from the altruist Andrew Carnegie.

In 1875 Ross started flowing a broadsheet proposition which point by point the Rosstown venture, an extensive scale sugar beet handling factory, a railroad line to serve it, and a private domain, named after him on the edge of the city among Melbourne and the town of Oakleigh. Despite the fact that he started assembling the factory, it never started creation, and the Rosstown Railway he built was never utilized.
Anyway the home sold well and continuously Rosstown had developed to a sensible size supported by the opening of the railroad to Melbourne in 1879.
Carnegie Post Office opened on 1 September 1911. Carnegie was initially part of the City of Caulfield and by the 1920s it had a considerable business region.
The Carnegie theater was a well known film during the 1930s.
