Happy 25th Birthday Internet!
What we now call the World Wide Web was created back in 1989. It was the idea of Tim Berners-Lee who put his idea to his managers at CERN. The idea was simple – link computers to share information faster.
How has the internet changed our lives?
Business
Your customers used to be a suburb or maybe even city wide. It’s now global with little effort. The retail and music industries have most notably been affected in a negative way however they are learning to quickly adapt.
Snail mail indeed. I remember when I first started in Web design 10 years ago, how slow it was to just receive a logo file via the post. It would add months to the process. There are many good benefits from the instantaneousness of email but the down side is its hard to escape (after hours and weekends).
Banking
How did anyone get anything done back in the “good ole days?” Doing chores to the bank each day would have been very painful and time wasting. You can now check your bank account via a phone or tablet while sitting in your lounge watching TV.
Socializing
Keeping in touch with new and old friends has never been easier – Even if you don’t want too 🙂
Organising events is instant and streamlined. Knowing your friends unfiltered thoughts can sometimes be a two side coin.
Personal Information
One of the problems with the Internet is how open your personal info is. It is scary to think back how anonymous we were 10 years ago compared to now. A famous Youtube clip shows a street magician who can take a photo of your face while you’re not looking and then find personal information about you, like your name and address. Some of this information benefits small businesses marketing, but only in a very general way – so far.
Knowledge Sharing
Everything from life stories to tips and tricks. This one factor more than any other has paved the road for the “information age.”
