Google to split mobile results – Newsletter December

While mobile and desktop results have been slightly different for some time there seems to be some talk about a big change coming.

Currently the results change if the websites listed have a mobile version or not.

Google webmaster analyst Gary Illyes noted that Google is looking to create two separate search indexes.

How will this affect me?

Mobile usage is at an all time high so factors like speed, ease of use, layout and customer interaction will impact on how you rank.

Questions and Answers

Q: How do I make sure my site is mobile friendly?

A: Your first step is to buy a responsive site. This will ensure that your website maintains usability as it changes slightly to fit onto mobiles, tablets and smaller screens. For example a 3 column layout changes to 1 column on a mobile so the text is nice and big.

Next, make sure all of your images are a small file size.

Speed! Less is more for mobile sites. Don’t overload your site with lots of images and videos.
